OUR STORY

We at EAT Umeå believe that there is always a conversation to be had over food, no matter the cultural distinctions, the language barriers and the social restraints.

The project EAT Umea was conceived over a fika at SFI one fine afternoon. As everybody sat with their lunchboxes open, smells of foods from all over the world wafted through the lunchroom and the realisation hit of how food opens up the possibilities of conversations, of how it gives us a glimpse of others cultures and the stories it carries with us.

We started out as part of a research project called {theEATproject}  which uses food as a tool to understand migration & integration through designed social experiences.

EAT Umea started its EAT The World workshop series in October 2016 which continues to run. It launched its Suitcase Dinners in spring 2018. The pop-up dinner nights are based around a theme and are an exclusive dining experience. They are reminiscent of eating in a foreign land, always packed with a surprise element.

The Umeå kommun awarded us with a prize for a sustainable project in April 2017. We presented at the Pecha Kucha Umeå as well as held a workshop for the public at Smakfestival Umeå in September 2017.

We continue to work with international artisans based locally in Umeå and create a one of a kind collective food experiences.
